What is a baccarat game?

Baccarat, also referred to as Punto Banco, is one of the card games you will find at a legit online casino in Australia including LevelUp. The game originated in Italy in the 1400s with the name coming from an Italian word ‘zero’. This was in relation to the cards that would have a zero value. They included tens, Jacks, Queens, and Kings. Over the years, different versions of the game have been created including Punto Banco, which is the most common version, Baccarat chemin de fer, and Baccarat Banque.

Punto Banco is the most popular version spread across many countries including Australia. This is a game that involves comparing cards dealt between the ‘player’ and the ‘banker’ and the game is played from a ‘shoe’ where the playing cards are loaded within 6-8 decks. Baccarat is a simple game with players having three simple types of bets to make. The bets include Player win, Banker win, or a tie.

To start the game, two hands will be dealt on the table for each hand (banker’s hand and a player’s hand). A quick explanation of the game. Let’s assume the banker’s hand is Hand A and the player’s hand is Hand B. After a dealer has placed two cards on each section of the table, each hand will be calculated its points and the value of each hand will be determined.

Remember, we stated that cards with zero value include tens, Jacks, Queens, and Kings. The latter three are also referred to as face cards. The other cards will represent their face value. This means that if the face on the card is 2, the value will be 2 points. What about Ace? Well, any Ace face on the card will represent one point. It is also important to note that if a two-digit number is achieved as the value of your hand, the second digit will represent the points.

To put it into perspective, assume that the following are the values:

  • The Player gets a 9 and a 7
  • The Banker gets a 10 and a 7

From the values of the two above, The Banker will have won the game since the value will be (10+7= {0+7 = 7}) while The Player will have the value as (9+7 = 16, hence 6). In both cases, the second digits have been used. In a nutshell, a winner must have their bet closest to nine (9).

However, a different rule comes in when the value of the first two cards brings a total of 8 or 9. Whoever hits either total between The Player and The Banker will automatically win the game as this is referred to as a natural win. After this happens, there will be no more cards dealt and one can cash out any bet that was placed.

Is baccarat a game of skill?

As opposed to many who view this as a game of skill, baccarat is purely a game of chance. The only trick or strategy that should be applied for a good payout is placing a wager on the lowest house edge. Once the game has started, you will have no control over the results or what is going to happen just like in the slots.

The ‘closest’ strategy to pick the best bet on a baccarat game and avoid the worst one is placing a bet with the lowest house edge. By this, one is advised to always back The Banker and try as much as possible to stay away from a tie bet. The tie bet will always have a ridiculous house edge and this remains one of the bet types you want to avoid at all costs. The take out is that baccarat is a game of chance and not a skill game since no outcome can be influenced. For that reason, new and experienced players all stand a chance to win the game when they keep the house edge to the minimum.

How do you win at baccarat?

As stated earlier, a player who wins will be the one closest to a total of 9 points from the two cards dealt. Remember the value each card represents and remember that a two-digit total number will have only the second digit counting. Moreover, a natural win is triggered automatically to any player if the total value is 8 or 9. Once this is done, the game ends at this point with cash outs allowed for any prior bet that was placed.

However, there is more to this game. What happens if there is no natural win on either side? The answer is simple. This opens room for a probability of another card being drawn. Naturally, The Player’s hand goes first, and in the instance where the total value stands at 6 or 7, they stand. However, if the total value of the two cards is between 0-5, a third card will be drawn to the player.

It is a little complicated when it gets on The Banker’s side. If no third card is drawn by The Player (meaning the total value is 6 or 7), The Banker will get the chance to draw a card if the total value is between 0-5. If the value is 6 or 7, The Banker stays.

However, if The Player drew a third card, the following rules will apply to The Banker:

The Player’s third card drawn (Face)
The Banker Actions (Total Points)
9, 10, Ace, or face cards0-3 draws4-7 stays
80-2 draws3-7 stays
6 or 70-6 draws7 stays
4 or 50-5 draws6 or 7 stays
2 or 30-4 draws5-7 stays

In all the above instances, the total points will be calculated after all the cards are dealt and the one closest to a total of 9 points will be the winner.

A tie bet in baccarat will involve both The Player and The Banker having the same points. In such an occurrence, there will be no winner or loser since the bets are returned. A perfect tie bet will be 8:1 and 9:1.

Is baccarat hard to learn?

The simple answer is no. Baccarat does not need special expertise to learn and is a very simple game with three different outcomes (Player win, Banker win, or a tie). Our guide provides a deeper insight into the game including the basics of the game. When applied, winning this game of chance is easy. You will be thrilled to know that inexperienced and first-timers can also play the game without any difficulty.

What is the best bet in baccarat?

The best bet in baccarat will be the one with the lowest house edge. The Banker’s bet always has the house edge at 1.06%, the Player’s bet has its house edge at 1.24%, while the tie bet has its house edge at 14.36%. You would want to avoid the tie bet and always back the Banker since it is the best bet with the lowest house edge.
